Educació Química EduQ journal

Educació Química. EduQ is a journal that was launched in 2008 and is issued every four months. It is a Catalan language publication specialising in chemistry teaching. Certain issues incorporate occasional contributions in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and English. EduQ is addressed to people interested in teaching chemistry, with special emphasis on high school level (students aged 12-18 years), although it also endeavours to appeal to science teachers in all fields generally.

The aim of this journal is to become a benchmark for chemistry teachers and a channel for disseminating their views and showcasing their inquisitive minds. EduQ strives to bring together members from the sphere of chemistry education with the aim of sharing experiences among all levels and exchanging strategies and resources for teaching and for developing scientific skills in the realm of chemistry. EduQ seeks to offer teaching staff a wide range of articles that could be valuable in enhancing their day-to-day tasks and their professional backgrounds.

Awards for High School Research Projects in Chemistry

Since 2006, the Catalan Society of Chemistry has organised the Awards for High School Research Projects in Chemistry on an annual basis. The aim is to encourage students and teachers to engage in a research project addressing one or more aspects relating to chemistry.

Several criteria are applied when granting these awards, taking into consideration the quality and presentation of the work, innovative ideas, experimental work, planning, the level of difficulty of the research, the volume of work and, in particular, the originality of the project and the creative ability of the students.

The winners and finalists have the opportunity to become acquainted with and participate in one of Catalonia’s research groups. Furthermore, since 2011 a Special Award for Scientific Stays has also been presented.

Institutions that participate in these awards:

The Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC)

The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC)

The Institute of Material Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC)

The Faculty of Pharmacy. University of Barcelona (UB)

The Faculty of Chemistry. University of Barcelona (UB)

The Institute of Chemistry of Sarrià (IQS-URL)

The Department of Chemistry. Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB)

The Institute of Energy Technologies. Technical University of Catalonia (UPC)

The Department of Chemistry. University of Girona (UdG)

The Department of Chemistry. University of Lleida (UdL)

The Faculty of Chemistry. Rovira i Virgili University (URV)

The Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ)

Chemistry Debates at the Institute for Catalan Studies

These events are organised in spring, usually on a Wednesday afternoon in April. They deal with a topic of interest concerning chemistry teaching at high school level and seek to act as a meeting point for chemistry teachers. Lecturers of first-year university modules are invited to attend these debates as well. In addition, these events offer a setting for the presentation of the Awards and Diplomas for High School Research Projects in Chemistry.

Physics and Chemistry Workshop at the Institute for Catalan Studies

This event usually takes place on a Wednesday in October or November. It is organised in conjunction with the Catalan Society of Physics and the Association of Physics and Chemistry Professors of Catalonia. It centres on topics of interest for physics and chemistry teaching staff at high school level and aims to offer a meeting point for university lecturers closely involved with high school.

Chemical Education Meeting

This event takes place a week before the Physics and Chemistry Workshop at the Institute for Catalan Studies. This meeting provides an opportunity for participants to offer oral presentations and posters.

The Global Experiment

The Global Experiment was a proposal by the international committee for the International Year of Chemistry (ICY 2011) encouraging students from all over the world to conduct experimental activities highlighting the role of chemistry in relation to water quality, purification and water treatments.

Chemical Misconceptions

Chemical misconceptions: prevention, diagnosis and cure is a project directed by the English professor Keith Taber, from Cambridge University, that proposes a set of activities to be carried out in the classroom to help students in the learning process and to avoid misconceptions.
